Project 02

White River Restaurant + Canoe Center

Project Statement [PDF]

Description:
Fine dining restaurant on the White River (north edge of downtown Muncie) combined with canoe and kayaking recreation. Please take notes during our discussion for supplemental information.

Restaurant + Canoe Launch Spatial Program:
+ Entry/Waiting Area (500 sq ft)
+ Restrooms (Total 400 sq ft)
+ Indoor Dining Areas (Total 2000 sq ft)
+ Outdoor Dining Areas (Total 500-1000 sq ft)
+ Kitchen Area (1000 sq ft))
+ Food Storage (200 sq ft)
+ Waiting Stations (2 @ 50 sq ft Total)
+ Employee Restroom (100 sq ft)
+ Space for Live Entertainment (100 sq ft)
+ Canoe and kayak storage (400 sq ft)
+ Canoe and kayak sales/tour office (200 sq ft)
+ Canoe and kayak launch area (dedicated shore line + a small dock)

Several points and constraints should be noted for your decision-making:

+ Your structural system should be clearly articulated and expressive, while providing a modular ordering system for indoor and outdoor spaces and façade/envelope articulations.

+ Structure, organization, and form of the project should make a meaningful gesture to the river and views.

+ Circulation will be an additional ordering system as it will be important to clearly move people through a sequence (waiting, bar, dining, etc), frame scenic views, and possibly move vertically. You also have to deal with restaurant spaces and canoe spaces—how do these two distinct functions co-exist? where are they clearly separated? where do they overlap?

+ In fact, spatial sequence will be key. Think about the approach to your restaurant and the river. What will people see? How do you reveal views of what is around?
